Burgundy: shade to be seen in this Autumn/Winter

by michaeljohn13. November 2012 11:39

With Burgundy being spotted all over the A/W 12 catwalks from Tory Burch, Acne, Alexander Mcqueen and many more, beauty has been quick to catch on to this return to deep glamour and opulence.

Don’t leave your nails behind – the colour to be spotted in up to Christmas and into the breezy new months – is Essie’s Bold and Beautiful. A burgundy shade glamorous enough to make an evening statement, whilst perfectly workable for the modern day working lady too.

Essie founder, Essie Weingarten, says, “I absolutely love hearing from women about how Essie color makes them feel. And when they tell me it made them feel powerful and poised in a business meeting, to me, that’s just the best!” She adds, “Now, I get such a thrill from rubbing elbows with more fabulous women than ever. I created this collection with those can-do women in mind!”

Pop into Michaeljohn in your lunchbreak for a quick manicure and Essie shades.

Winter nail kit essentials

by michaeljohn30. October 2012 17:06

With central heating and extreme change in temperatures not very helpful to the condition of your hands and nails over the next few months, it’s as important as ever to take care of them now as during the showy summer months. Beyond manicures and deep darker colours, there are some all important pieces for your nail kit, which are often forgotten and can boost nail condition from your home sofa!

We’ve picked a few you shouldn’t overlook – all available at Michaeljohn.

Essie cuticle pen; a natural cuticle softener that prevents drying while moisturising emollients heal and soothe both cuticle and nail, leaving nails colour ready. The Essie Cuticle Pen is hypo-allergenic and leaves cuticles silky smooth and ready to be pushed back.

Matte finisher; Perfect matte no lustre-topcoat. Apply over any polish color to create a matte finish.

CND essentials Solar Oil; Sweet almond oil and jojoba oil (condition) based, applying it daily ‘keeps cuticles smooth and helps polish last longer,’ says leading in house manicurist, Samantha Landesberg.

Tropical shine nail file; Step 1 smoothes nail surface. Step 2 for a super shine.

Essie 'Cheers to You Gift Set’ includes; Pear and Fig Smoothie Hand and Body Lotion. Fresh, clean scent of fragrant fig trees and sweet pears blended with aloe vera, shea butter and vitamins to protect and moisturize skin. Full-size Bordeaux nail color, A deep red wine/ Mini 3-Way Glaze; All-in-one base coat, strengthener and topcoat.

Also look out for the Essice cuticle oil.

'Winter manicure/pedicure makeover': Hand and feet healing scrubs; How To Make Your Own

by michaeljohn23. October 2012 12:55

With winter now upon us, perhaps one mercy it brings us, is time to give some of our best kept body parts a rest from routine buffing and repolishing; hands and feet need to be restored and rejuvenated during these months, where dry skin and cracks may have occurred or kickstarted during summertime sandal wearing.

The perfect way to activate your skin back into action is with a winter healing sugar scrub or hot oil treatment. Here our Michaeljohn beauty therapist, Samantha Landesberg – explains how to create your own to just the right texture to heal, exfoliate and emolliate feet. And moreover it's much more enticing when it's a 'Made your own' jar!

Take 3 simple yet effective ingredients: Brown Sugar, Cocoa butter, Almond Oil

1)    Take a cup of brown sugar, a quarter cup of almond oil, 3 pumps of cocoa butter and mix all together. Apply on hands all over, rub palms of hands together, rinse under hot water.( when you rinse all sugar desolves and moisture sinks it) This is best for Exfoliation – getting rid of dead skin.

2)    For the hot oil treatment: Take ½ cup of any oil, put in a few drops of incense e.g lavender, teatree. Make it like a bamburee, so fill bowl with hot water from the kettle, place another bowl on top of it. Warm the mix up for 5 mins, then brush over hands, wrap them in cling film and leave over hands for 15mins. Take it all off, wash hands and pat dry. This is really good for moisturising dry, cracked skin.

Benefits:

Keeping feet clean if they are cracked is key to avoiding infection.

Unlike a salt scrub, sugar scrubs do not dry the skin.

Sugar scrubs are full of alpha-hydroxy - which is exfoliating and emollient.

5 Key products recommended for your winter hand and nail rejuvenation process:

1)Seche Vite – top and base coat

2)Essie nail polishes – winter essentials include ‘Wicked,’ ‘Who She Red,’ ‘Mademoiselle.’

3)Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil

4)Essie Corrector Pen

5)Marine Sea Salts(to be dipped into water)

Quick tips on the quick, dry manicure

by michaeljohn10. October 2012 17:51

With time always of the essence at the moment, a quick manicure can satisfy your immediate beauty needs in a lunchbreak.

Michaeljohn manicurist, Samantha Landesberg, broke down the steps for us to a successful quick, dry manicure which is set to last 10days – 2 weeks just like a full nail treatment.

·         File and Buff

·         Apply cuticle remover and moisturize into cuticles

·         Push back cuticles with orange stick and wipe away excess on the nail bed

·         SECRET TIP: Take white buffing block gently across nail to remove excess at this stage.

·         Cleanse nail with nail varnish remover otherwise varnish wont last and will bleed into cuticles.

·         Apply base coat, 2 coats of colour and importantly a top coat.

DON’T FORGET TO APPLY A BASE COAT OTHERWISE THE NAIL BECOMES STAINED.

For a very natural look, Essie in Mademoiselle is a best seller and you cant go wrong.

Wearable nail trend; a modern take on NUDE NUDE NUDE

by michaeljohn2. October 2012 14:51

Amongst all the crazy nail art and complex creations floating around nail land recently, a new and very wearable trend seems to be emerging, getting back to a sophisticated, minimalist look.  It’s now back to NUDE, NUDE, NUDE and if you think this reads ‘boring’, then think again, its nude coming into the modern day with a slightly unusual take, which actually works out as super cool, as it's nude with a taupe come beige edge.

Essie Jazz shade was seen at the Peter Pilotto fashion show, where now the nude take isn’t so much pinky, girly tones but a more modern greige take.

Top tip from Michaeljohn manicurists is to ensure you get a right shade to suit your skin tone – rather than the pinks of the one time fashionable French manicure, go for a modern nude or fresh tone. And be sure to even out the tone of the nail base before applying your colour with a good base coat.

Once converted there is no going back to all the bold, neon colour clashing!

Bio Sculpture – Everything you need to know. The original Everlasting Manicure!

by michaeljohn3. July 2012 15:33

Bio Sculpture was founded and created by Elmien Scholtz, who had a vision to create a nail care product that not only looked beautiful but was long lasting, natural looking, durable and enhanced the natural nail.

Bio Sculpture Gel is an exceptionally durable gel treatment that nurtures the nail bed whilst allowing the nail to look immaculate. It is a healthy nail system that will not chip or damage your nails, protecting and strengthening the natural nail in the process.

Bio Sculpture provides a professional glossy nail covering that lasts for up to 3 weeks, it is applied with minimal buffing and no primers or bonders so there is no de-hydration of the natural nail. Layers of gel are applied to the natural nail and cured under a UV lamp; the nails are dry to touch once they are cured.

Bio Sculpture Gel is removed with a soak-off solution in less than 15 minutes, leaving natural nails in their original or improved condition. Bio Sculpture Gel can be used to sculpt and shape natural nails in order to lengthen existing nails or enhance their natural shape.
